This sand is clean and free from nasty little bits of grit. It is designed for use by children and so complies to all the relevant standards. We use it in our parrots' cages (together with a little added grit!). We have owned gerbils in the past and, if added to peat, this sand will make an excellent burrowing medium. Hope this helps.

I bought a bag of this sand to use in my 2 foot fish tank 3 years ago. It is ideal for a fish tank as the sand size is lava like once wet. This means it won’t get sucked up into the filtration. I have been keeping fish for 10 years. Fish poo is more visible on sand so will sit on top where as in gravel it would drop down and not be as easy to spot. When you buy this put half in a bucket and stick a hose in it in the garden until the water runs clear. I did not find a need to boil the sand and this did not cause any issues for me. My gold fish is 7 years old and I changed the gravel to sand for 3 years of this period and did not affect the fish, I did get a high flow rate filter as sand does not have has much biological filer properties as sand (surface area). You want the filter to turn over the fish tank water 4 times an hour for optimum water filtration and to make your water crystal clear. I notice another review talks about having issues but personally this product is ideal. The only reason I am back is I have upgraded to a 4 foot tank and am buying 2 more bags. So there you have it, make sure your tank is well balanced and when you change an element of the substrate look at your filter and flow rate.

i used this for my tropical fish tank after reading all the reviews...i WOULD NOT recommend using this in your fish tank unless you want constanly dirty looking water...we cleaned it and also boiled it on the stove which did removed alot of the dirt i put it into the tank and filled it..and within 3 days the tank was a horrible yellow greeny grey gruby colour again i would pay the extra money and pay out for proper aquarium sand as we must of been stood taking turns washing it for at least 5 hours...and this was after it had been boiled!! i would upload a picture of my tank with it in but it wont allow me!!

Hi, thank you for your question.

I have looked into your query and I am unable to advise how many bags of sand are required for the Chad Valley Pink Sand and Water Pit, as the capacity given for this is in Litres. I am unable to convert Litres to Kg as Litre is a unit of volume and Kg is a unit of weight.

Hello there,

We advise keeping the sand out of contact for animals in general. It is more for hygiene reasons than anything else.

Don't see why not, if its safe for children it should be OK for pets - as long as you maintain hygiene.

I have looked into this and can advise that the majority of this sand is between 250-1000 microns, so will not suit your needs.
