if you programme numberrs into the main handset does it automatically transfer to the second handset, or do numbers have to be entered twice

Numbers can be input into any handset and then copied to any other handset. So it is not automatic as such, but you only have to enter them once and then copy. This does mean that you can have different phone book numbers on different handsets or copy them between handsets if you want to replicate the stored numbers on each handset.

Having looked into this for you, I can confirm that any phone number stored in the phone book is stored into a shared phone book on the base set that can be accessed by any phone registered to the base set.
